Originally the avatar of an unknown tester from the Alpha Era, the skin and movement data of the Steve model were corrupted when the tester's computer crashed when the tester - whilst building a tower from bedrock - hit the height maximum. After rebooting the computer, the tester found out the game still intact, but his character, Steve, was glitched: spasmic movement, skin completely black as if it was in complete darkness, or missing pixels, leaving 'holes' in the body, with eerie red eyes.
